“In art, the hand can never execute anything higher than the heart can imagine.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

The truth is, there is no right way. Viewing art can be approached in many different ways. Everyone sees things differently and interprets messages in unique ways. This is what makes viewing art so fun and memorable. So, even though there’s no set correct way to view art, here are some tips to help you get started or improve your analysis skills.
First, look at what’s in front of you. Don’t just gloss your eyes over the painting for a mere second, but actually look at what’s been made. Notice the texture, the colors, the objects, and the patterns. This may seem unnecessary at first, but this is what will really help you dive into the deeper meaning behind the piece.
Next, with what you’ve found, try to find the meaning. Observe what feelings or emotions arise within yourself when you view the work of art or attempt to build context by relating the work to the time it was made and the artist's personal life.
Remember, there’s no wrong answer. Art can mean something different to everyone and that’s what makes it so exciting! One may find the swirl of colors sentimental while another may find it riveting. The difference in reactions when viewing art is what makes art that much better, so, don’t be afraid to trust your instinct and find joy in viewing art in your own special way.
