Young Women in Art

Although art history typically focuses on male-dominant fields and artworks, the role of women in art cannot be understated. Women have played a major role in artistic endeavors as both collectors or patrons. Young women often do not have equal access to training places and cannot showcase their work the same way as their male counterparts.

One of the first well-known female artists who plays a prominent role in history is known as Dibutades. Her artwork traced an image of ancient mythology tales, following Greek Goddesses such as Athena and other powerful women.

Due to the Feminist Movement in the late twentieth century, the recognition of women in art increased. Young women would often purchase artworks to study. The classic painting "Portia Wounding Her Thigh" signifies that women do have value just as much as men. In this painting, a woman is holding an object in front of a mirror. Based on the reflection of several males in the corner, the viewer can understand that she holds equal courage and strength as the men.

Another painting that shows the anguish of women in male dominated fields is the painting "Nameless and Faceless". This painting depicts a woman who is not taken seriously as an artist by the men in her life. The contempt in the men's faces, suggests that do not respect the painter’s value.

Surrealism is the form of art that women have flourished in the most. These important female figures in art history prove that women can be more than objects in the paintings; they can be the artist just as well as they play the subject.
